A freight train collided with a double-decker passenger bus in Atlacomulco, Mexico. In the horrific accident, 10 people lost their lives, and 45 others were injured.
The incident occurred at a level crossing on the Maravatío-Atlacomulco highway, located approximately 130 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. In footage captured by eyewitnesses on their mobile phones, it was seen that while the vehicles were waiting for the train to pass, a bus suddenly moved forward. As the bus reached the middle of the tracks, it was struck by the rapidly approaching freight train with a loud crash.
As a result of the collision, the bus was torn apart and dragged hundreds of meters in front of the train. Numerous ambulances, fire trucks, and Red Cross teams were dispatched to the scene. After initial interventions, dozens of injured individuals were taken to hospitals.
Authorities stated that the bus was en route from San Felipe del Progreso to Mexico City. The reason why the bus driver entered the train tracks is still unknown.
The railway company Canadian Pacific Kansas City of Mexico confirmed the accident and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. The municipality of Atlacomulco also urged citizens not to go to the scene. A period of mourning was declared for those who lost their lives in the city.
Shortly before this incident, a passenger bus in Sri Lanka had also plunged into a ravine, resulting in 15 deaths and 16 injuries.
