CANiK, one of Turkey's firearms manufacturers, is preparing to start mass production in its factory established in the USA in December.
Cahit Utku Aral, General Manager of Samsun Yurt Savunma (SYS) Group, which includes CANiK, answered questions from AA correspondent regarding their investment in the USA at the SAHA EXPO International Defense, Aviation, and Space Industry Fair.
Aral stated that CANiK is the 5th largest company in the world based on its sales in the USA alone.
Emphasizing that the US Army and law enforcement are important markets for CANiK, Aral noted:
"Although we won the border security and customs tender in 2017, we lagged behind in points due to the lack of production in the USA and lost the job to another US manufacturer. At this point, as a company that has reached a production capacity of 500,000 pistols per year, we now want to win tenders from the US Army and police. We established the facility in South Florida not only for light weapons but also with the vision of producing our heavy machine guns and artillery in the future to serve the US Army." THE GOAL IS TO EXPAND WORLDWIDEAral emphasized that the needs of one country would not be sufficient for a company, and therefore they aim to succeed in global markets. He mentioned that the USA is one of the largest markets for the weapons and weapon systems they produce, stating, "Our goal is to grow our position globally. In line with this vision, we felt the need to open a factory in the USA." "WE DO NOT PLAN TO PRODUCE PRODUCTS WE MANUFACTURE IN THE USA IN TURKEY"Aral stated that the production facility in South Florida has a total closed area of 20,000 square meters. Noting that they will conduct all US operations from this facility, Aral said, "We are now qualifying. We will probably start mass production in December and launch American products along with the SHOT Show, and we will also start our shipments there. We do not plan to produce the products we manufacture in the USA in Turkey. We want to produce specific products for there. Otherwise, there would be confusion in people's minds about which is American-made and which is Turkish-made. We do not want that confusion." he stated. To ensure profitability in the USA as well as in Turkey, Aral explained that they have placed importance on automation investments, creating differences in both product selection and technologies. Aral emphasized that they have established completely robotic lines in the facility so that even the smallest materials will not be carried by humans, and they designed the factory considering the products they will produce in the future. ONE OF THE TOP 3 IN THE WORLDAral pointed out that only three companies, including CANiK, produce the 30-millimeter weapon among their products, stating that this weapon has a very high rate of fire and there is a demand for this product in the US market. He expressed that they have recognized this gap and have initiatives related to it, saying, "We have prepared a facility that can even manufacture our medium-caliber weapons and their remotely controlled firing systems in American-made. All our lines are planned to be capable of producing such large products." he said. "OUR EXPECTATION IS A SIGNIFICANT GROWTH FOR SYS GROUP IN 2025"Providing information about the contribution of the facility established in the USA to CANiK, Cahit Utku Aral stated, "We forecast a production of between 60,000 and 70,000 in the first year at our facility in the USA. The amount of weapons we will ship from Turkey to the USA is approximately 400,000, and we will reach a total of 460,000 to 470,000 in the US market. This figure will elevate our position from 5th to 4th in the USA." he evaluated. Aral noted that 2025 will be a milestone year for the company, stating that they have made the necessary preparations for the production and shipment of AEI Systems' low-recoil cannon, and that many of Unirobotics' new weapon towers have already started selling. He concluded his remarks by saying: "Our expectation is a significant growth for SYS Group in 2025. Because it will be a year when the projects we have been working on for 4-5 years will be on sale for 12 months. Therefore, it is very exciting for us. We are very excited on the US side, as it will contribute approximately 35-40 million dollars to our ecosystem. The same goes for the UK, and the same goes for Unirobotics. We anticipate the group's revenue to be around 350 million dollars for next year. This is a significant figure in our industry."
