The increasing technological capabilities of next-generation fighter jets are driving maintenance and support costs to rise exponentially. By 2035, global spending in this area is expected to reach an annual $111 billion, with the share allocated from defense budgets in NATO countries projected to rise to 26%.

The global aviation consulting firm Oliver Wyman has published a comprehensive report predicting that the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) costs of advanced combat aircraft will rise significantly in the coming years. According to the report, spending in this area will reach $97 billion in 2025 alone. However, this figure will not stop there; it is expected to increase to $111 billion by 2035, with a growth rate of 14.43%.

HIGH-TECH AIRCRAFT LIKE THE F-35 AND B-21 ARE DRIVING UP COSTS

One of the main reasons for the cost increase is the introduction of advanced combat aircraft. Platforms like the U.S. F-35 and the next-generation B-21 Raider require more expensive maintenance processes due to advanced engines, stealth systems, and complex software. The F-35s, which currently make up 2.2% of the global fleet, are expected to reach 9.5% by 2035.

WHILE MAINTENANCE COSTS RISE, THE FLEET BECOMES MORE COMPLEX

According to the report, approximately half of the 310 combat aircraft entering service worldwide each year are F-35s. However, this situation is not unique to the U.S. Europe has platforms like the A400M and NH-90, and Russia, China, India, and South Korea also have similar high-cost projects. Today, aircraft carrying advanced systems make up 11% of the total fleet, and this ratio is expected to rise to 17% by 2035.

BUDGET BALANCE IN NATO IS CHANGING

NATO countries currently allocate an average of 16% of their defense spending to maintenance, repair, and support activities. However, due to increasing technological complexity, this ratio is expected to rise to 26% by 2035. This increase represents a significant budget pressure in terms of ensuring operational continuity.

UNMANNED SYSTEMS AND SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES ARE ALSO INCREASING COSTS

The proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles is also emerging as a significant factor in rising maintenance costs. The report suggests that strategies such as multinational spare parts agreements, expanding supply chains, and opening maintenance projects to competition could be implemented to control these costs.

MRO IS VITAL NOT ONLY IN PEACE BUT ALSO IN WAR

The report emphasizes that maintenance and support systems are a key element for operational readiness and sustainability not only during peacetime but also in times of war. The ability of advanced systems to undertake long-term missions is directly dependent on the level of investment and preparedness in this area.
