The US Treasury Department has officially removed Syria from the list of "state sponsors of terrorism," where it had been since 1979. Washington also lifted the "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" status of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, removing the group from the sanctions list.
The US Department of the Treasury has announced that Syria has been officially removed from the list of "state sponsors of terrorism."
In a written statement from the US Department of the Treasury, it was stated that, in line with President Donald Trump's policy on Syria, this country has been officially removed from the list of "state sponsors of terrorism."
HTS ALSO REMOVED FROM "TERRORIST ORGANIZATION" STATUS
The statement also announced that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has been removed from the status of "Specially Designated Global Terrorist Organization" (SDGT). In this context, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), affiliated with the US Department of the Treasury, has also removed HTS from the List of Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons.
SYRIA HAD BEEN ADDED IN 1979
The US administration had declared its intention to remove Syria from the said list in a notification to Congress in July. The US had added Syria to the list of "state sponsors of terrorism" in 1979. Iran, Cuba, and North Korea remain on that list.
