The US airstrike around Bandar Abbas in southern Iran has raised tensions in the region. Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced that they struck a US air base in the area in response to the attack. Following the escalation, Kuwait also reported being hit by missile and drone strikes. Iran warned that it would respond much more harshly if further attacks occur.
A new development that raises tensions in the Middle East has occurred. Iranian media reported that three consecutive explosion sounds were heard during the night east of the city of Bandar Abbas in the south of the country. It was reported that air defense systems were briefly activated in the region following the explosions.
Iran's state television and Fars News Agency stated that investigations into the cause of the explosions, which occurred around 01:30 local time, are ongoing, while no official statement was initially made by Iranian authorities.
The U.S. military later announced in a statement that it had conducted an airstrike on a military area in southern Iran, citing a threat to American forces and commercial maritime traffic in the region. The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) had previously announced that it had targeted missile bases and military boats reportedly laying mines in Iran in recent days.
IRAN: WE STRUCK US AIR BASE
Following the escalation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a written statement, announcing that the U.S. had struck a point near Bandar Abbas Airport at dawn and that, in response, the U.S. air base from which the attack was launched was targeted.
The statement said, "This response is a serious warning for the enemy to know that its aggression will not go unanswered. If repeated, our response will be more decisive."
While Iran did not disclose in which country the targeted U.S. air base was located, Kuwait, one of the countries hosting U.S. bases in the region, made a notable announcement.
KUWAIT: WE WERE TARGETED BY MISSILE AND DRONE ATTACK
In a statement by the Kuwaiti army, it was stated that the country was subjected to a missile and unmanned aerial vehicle attack. However, details about the targeted area were not shared.
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reacted strongly to the Washington administration, arguing that the U.S. had violated the ceasefire with the latest attacks. The statement said, "The U.S. has clearly violated the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region in the last 48 hours. Iran holds the U.S. regime responsible for all consequences arising from these aggressive and unjustified actions."
Iranian Army Spokesman Abolfazl Shekarchi also issued a notable warning regarding possible new conflicts. Shekarchi said, "If the region enters a new war, Iran's response will go beyond regional borders and will be much heavier."
