Tension in the Middle East escalated again after a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, followed by mutual accusations.
TRUMP SIGNALS RETALIATION
US President Donald Trump, claiming Iran carried out the attack, described the attempt as a "stupid violation" of the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran. In a statement, Trump said a total of four drone attacks were launched against a cargo ship, three of which were shot down by US forces, but one struck the ship's upper deck, causing damage. When asked whether there would be a potential response against Iran, Trump replied, "You will find out soon."
US MILITARY LAUNCHES STRIKES ON IRAN
Following Trump's statement, the US military conducted airstrikes around the Strait of Hormuz. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that US warplanes struck Iran's missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar facilities. The statement also said, "CENTCOM forces continue to provide safe passage coordination and support for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The US military remains ready and vigilant in the region to ensure all terms of the agreement with Iran are strictly implemented, adhered to, and fully maintained."
IRAN: PIER IN SIRIK CITY IN SOUTHERN IRAN ATTACKED
Iranian media reported that following the sound of explosions in Sirik city, Hormozgan Province in southern Iran, a pier in the city came under attack. According to a report by Iran's state television citing military sources, the Taheruyi Pier in Sirik was struck by an enemy attack. The source also stated that the Iranian Armed Forces had fired warning shots at some vessels attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz "without permission" during the day, and that these shots were fired from Sirik city.
FIRST A STATEMENT "WILL NOT GO UNANSWERED" PUBLISHED, THEN DENIED
A statement attributed to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, published by mainstream Iranian media outlets such as ISNA and Tabnak, included the phrase, "We emphasize that this aggression will not go unanswered, and our response will be swift and decisive at the time and place of our choosing."
However, Fars News Agency, citing information from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Public Relations Office, reported that statements attributed to the IRGC regarding the recent conflict with the US were not accurate. Following Fars News Agency's denial, some news agencies removed their previously published reports.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) had announced that for the first time since the agreement between the US and Iran, a commercial ship was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. A UKMTO statement noted that a cargo ship sailing off the coast of Oman was struck by a projectile of undetermined origin. The statement added that the projectile hit the ship's bridge, causing damage.
It was reported that there were no casualties or injuries among the crew on board the ship. Officials also stated that the incident did not cause any spill that would lead to environmental pollution. The UKMTO announced that authorities had launched an investigation after receiving the report of the attack. Ships in the area were advised to be cautious and report any suspicious situations to the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center.
THE AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN IRAN AND THE US
Iran and the US, within the framework of a mediation process through Pakistan, announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ceasing hostilities and resolving issues between the parties through negotiations. The memorandum, called the "Islamabad Agreement," was signed digitally by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump and came into effect.
The agreement includes provisions such as ending the war including in Lebanon, opening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade on Iran. Following the signing of the memorandum, the parties are expected to begin a 60-day negotiation process shortly on issues including Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions to reach a final agreement.
