Search efforts continue on their third day for high school teacher Mehmet Akkaya and his nephew Muhammed Abdullah Hakkıoğlu, whose vehicles were swept away in the flood disaster in Keşap, Giresun. During the searches, the vehicle, which had been dragged for kilometers in the water, was found in Keşap Creek. However, no trace of the uncle and nephew was found in the vehicle, which had been reduced to a pile of scrap.
Search efforts continue on the third day for high school teacher Mehmet Akkaya (45) and his nephew Muhammed Abdullah Hakkıoğlu (16), who went missing after their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in the Keşap district of Giresun.
STREAMS OVERFLOWED, HOMES AND WORKPLACES FLOODED
The heavy rainfall that affected the city on August 13 adversely impacted daily life. Approximately 100 kilograms of rain fell per square meter, causing floods and water overflows in the districts of Keşap, Espiye, and Yağlıdere. As some streams overflowed, many workplaces experienced water damage; homes, businesses, and vehicles were damaged.
VEHICLE WRECK FOUND, NO TRACE OF UNCLE AND NEPHEW
In Karabulduk town of Keşap district, Ahmet Yılmaz (50), who was in a vehicle swept away by floodwaters while traveling, saved himself with his own efforts, while Mehmet Akkaya and his nephew Muhammed Abdullah Hakkıoğlu went missing. Upon notification, AFAD, AKUT, and IHH search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area and began search operations using heavy machinery. During the searches, the vehicle, which had been dragged for kilometers in the water, was found in Keşap Stream. However, no trace of the uncle and nephew was found in the vehicle, which had turned into a pile of scrap metal.
5 DIFFERENT TEAMS SEARCH FOR UNCLE AND NEPHEW
Search efforts for the uncle and nephew resumed in the early hours of this morning. Approximately 200 teams are involved in the search operations, including AFAD and AFAD volunteers; Police Search and Rescue (PAK), Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK), UMKE, IHH Search and Rescue, AKUT, ATAK, fire department, underwater search and rescue, Special Provincial Administration, and the municipality. Teams are continuing their checks along an 8-kilometer stretch of the stream route with probes and have intensified their search efforts using thermal drone devices.
SEARCH OPERATIONS ON THEIR THIRD DAY
While family members continue to wait, search operations, which are being carried out in 5 different groups on their third day, are also accompanied by highly trained sniffer dogs. Meanwhile, in the damage assessment studies initiated regarding the flood disaster, it has been reported that damages amounting to 26 million liras have been identified in vehicles, workplaces, and residences.
