Due to the effects of drought last year, the rivers in Amasya dried up, but the snow and rainwater that fell in the last month increased the water level of the Yeşilırmak River. In the city where the Amasya Governorship issued a flood and overflow warning, the river waters rose up to 2 meters in some places, causing tables in a picnic area to be swept away by the current. Lütfi Kol, a döner master who follows the Yeşilırmak River from the restaurant he works at, said that the rains have brought smiles to their faces.
The Yeşilırmak River, which runs through the city, swelled due to melting snow and rainwater. While the increase in water levels delighted the public, the Amasya Governorship issued a flood and overflow warning.
In the statement made, it was noted that "The State Water Works has determined that the water levels in the Yeşilırmak River and the streams feeding it have been rising due to the heavy rainfall that has occurred in our province and neighboring provinces in recent days. In this context, we kindly ask our citizens, especially in rural areas, to be cautious against possible adverse events such as floods and overflow in river and stream beds."
PICNIC TABLES SWEPT AWAY BY THE CURRENT
In the vicinity of Helvacı Neighborhood, some of the picnic area near Çağlayan Bridge was surrounded by rising waters. 4 picnic tables were swept away by the current. The other picnic tables were saved thanks to being tied to trees with ropes.
"I'M SEEING THE WATER RISE THIS HIGH FOR THE FIRST TIME"
Can Çelik, who operates the picnic area, said, "We came to work early when we saw the warning from the governorship. 4 picnic tables were swept away by the current. We went into the water and saved the others by tying them with ropes. The water level rose by 2 meters. I am 33 years old. I am seeing the water rise this high for the first time."
AVERAGE DAM FILLING RATE IS AT 25 PERCENT
While leaving a dry year behind, Amasya Agricultural Chamber President Mustafa Cebeci, who believes that the average filling rate of dams, which is currently at 25 percent due to the ongoing rains since the beginning of January, will increase, stated, "Currently, the rainfall situation is very good. Hopefully, it continues like this. It will be a fruitful year. Because the streams had dried up. With the rains, the Yeşilırmak River, which we missed, has swelled again. There was 2 meters of snow in the Akdağ region. This will help increase our water supply," he said.
RAINS HAVE BROUGHT SMILES
Recalling that the regional producers were left longing for fruit, especially cherries and apples, after the agricultural frost disaster seen on April 11 last year, Cebeci emphasized that he hopes for a plentiful and bountiful harvest this summer. Lütfi Kol, a döner master who follows the Yeşilırmak River from the restaurant he works at, also stated that the rains have brought smiles to their faces.
