Users with a total credit card limit exceeding 400 thousand lira and who do not utilize their limit will have their limits gradually reduced. As reactions to this decision rise, the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK) has taken a new step. In this context, education and health expenses will not be affected by the credit card limit regulation.

The unused limits of users with a total credit card limit exceeding 400 thousand liras will be reduced on February 15 at rates ranging from 50% to 80%. The Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BRSA) announced the relevant decision at midnight on Friday, January 30. Following criticisms from users, a further statement was made the next day, announcing that 75% of cardholders would not be affected by this decision. However, the reactions did not subside.

HEALTH AND EDUCATION WILL BE EXEMPT

In response to these reactions, the BRSA sent a directive to banks stating that education and health expenses would be exempt from the new regulations regarding credit card limits.

The letter sent to banks by the BRSA stated that in order to prevent customer grievances, processes for obtaining and verifying income documents through digital channels should be established, and necessary systemic improvements should be made to ensure that education and health expenses are not negatively affected.

3-MONTH DEADLINE GIVEN TO BANKS

The letter requested that banks establish the necessary systemic infrastructure within a maximum of 3 months to ensure that the decision can be implemented healthily and uninterruptedly, and that all operational processes be completed thoroughly. Additionally, it was requested that a roadmap containing the steps to be taken during the compliance process be submitted to the BRSA through industry associations.

The regulation aims to align credit card limits with income and ensure the protection of financial consumers.
