A citizen who started olive harvesting in Aydın's Germencik district said that he could not find workers to harvest olives for a daily wage of 3,000 TL.
HARVEST HAS STARTEDOlive harvesting continues in Aydın, where the number of olive trees is the highest in Turkey. Esma Doğan, who is harvesting olives with her family in the Moralı neighborhood of Germencik, stated that the process of getting olive oil to the table is very labor-intensive. Doğan noted that the price of olive oil is 150 TL on the stock market and that this does not compensate for their labor, adding that despite it being an 'on year' for olives, the producer is also affected by the ongoing drought. Stating that they started harvesting olives a month ago, Doğan mentioned that they are trying to collect the crop as a family and that the harvesting process will take two months due to the lack of workers. "WE CANNOT FIND WORKERS TO HIRE"Doğan also stated that they cannot find workers to hire; "We grow olives, but we cannot find workers to process them. Although we have an olive shaking machine, we offer daily wages of 3,000 TL to workers who will use it. Despite paying olive pickers 1,500 TL a day, we cannot find workers to hire. Those who come for one or two days do not return. Even if our yield is high, we will not be able to find people to collect it. Not being able to find workers for this job, which pays 3,000 TL a day, puts us producers in a difficult situation," she said. "WE ARE TRYING TO CONTRIBUTE TO PRODUCTION"Doğan expressed that the products of the olive trees they irrigate are good, noting that the areas that are not irrigated do not produce olives due to drought. After effective rainfall, she stated that the olives revived in two days; "We will start harvesting from the mountain and move down to the plain. Since we are harvesting in a hilly area, it is very difficult to spread the covers, shake the olives, and collect those that fall. We are picking olives while stumbling and rolling. Although it is difficult to stand in this uneven terrain, we are trying to contribute to production by collecting the fallen olives one by one," she said. "THE PROCESS OF GETTING OLIVE OIL TO THE TABLE IS QUITE LABOR-INTENSIVE"Doğan stated that they also clean the olives that fall from the trees from branches and leaves; "Then we put the bags and take them to the olive oil processing facility. There, the olives are processed, and the oil is extracted. The process of getting olive oil to the table is quite labor-intensive. This year, the price of olive oil is also low. It is 150 TL per liter on the stock market. This price cannot be the equivalent of our labor. The price of olive oil this year does not satisfy us producers," she concluded.
