After the terrorist organization PKK disbanded and laid down its arms at the call of Abdullah Öcalan, focus shifted to the organization's branches in other countries. The Syrian branch, PYD/YPG/SDG, made an agreement with the new Damascus administration and handed over its weapons to the Syrian government. However, the PKK's Iranian branch, PJAK, stated that they would not lay down their arms.
After the terrorist organization PKK's decision to lay down arms and dissolve itself, attention turned to the organization's extensions in other countries.
YPG AGREED WITH SYRIA
The PKK's Syrian extension PYD/YPG/SDG signed an 8-point agreement with the new Damascus administration led by Ahmed Shara, established after Assad. In this context, YPG/SDG militants will hand over their weapons to the Syrian government and integrate into the newly established Syrian army.
PJAK: THE DISSOLUTION DECISION DOES NOT BIND US
PJAK, the Iranian extension of the PKK, announced that they would not lay down arms despite the PKK's decision. PJAK Co-Chair Amir Karimi stated that they see the call of terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan as "an important and positive step for the resolution of the Kurdish issue across the Middle East," and said they would continue the armed struggle against Tehran, adding, "As PJAK, we will neither lay down arms nor dissolve ourselves. The PKK's dissolution decision binds them, not us. PJAK's decision on this matter is different."
WHAT IS PJAK?
PJAK, which started its activities in Iran in 2004, has a membership of between 2,000 and 3,000.
The terrorist organization, which clashes with security forces in the mountainous regions along the Iran-Iraq border, is labeled as a terrorist by Tehran, Ankara, and Washington.
