In Syria, opposition groups have started using Turkish lira instead of Syrian lira in Aleppo, which they took from the Assad regime. The local people, expressing their happiness about this change, stated that during the Assad era, they had to carry money in bags to make purchases.
Returns to Aleppo, which has largely come under the control of armed opposition groups, are continuing. As those living in Idlib flock to Aleppo, shopping has started to be done using Turkish Lira.
"THANK GOD, WE ARE VERY HAPPY"
Mustafa Hasan, who said they used to carry money in bags during the regime period, stated, "I am a Syrian Turkmen. Thank God we are shopping with Turkish Lira. Right now, Assad's currency has no value left. Shopping has always been done with Turkish money. Thank God. We are very happy, may God let everyone experience this happiness. Shopping with Turkish Lira right now is an indescribable feeling. I cannot express the excitement and joy inside me to anyone," he said.
THEY USED TO CARRY MONEY IN BAGS
Hasan expressed, "I lived in Istanbul for 10 years, life is hard here, but I am happy because shopping is in Turkish Lira." He noted that they used to carry money in bags during Assad's era, saying, "We used to do our shopping by carrying money in bags. But now we can pay with the smallest amount. The 450,000 Syrian Liras I have here is equivalent to 450 TL. You can see how weak this money (Syrian Lira) is," he said.
Abu Ubeyde, a tradesman in Aleppo, said, "Life has started to continue as routine. Hopefully, life will be beautiful."
