In the Selim district of Kars, despite the freezing cold of winter, a greenhouse established by agricultural engineers has become an example for the local community. In defiance of those who say, "Crops cannot be grown in this climate," organic tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and salads are being produced in the greenhouse; this initiative has increased interest in greenhouse farming in the region.

Agricultural engineers working at the Selim Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry have created a greenhouse on the directorate's campus to inspire the local community and citizens from the villages.
Ignoring the citizens who say, "it's cold here, nothing will grow," the agricultural engineers cultivate many products such as organic tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, and eggplants in the greenhouse. They also serve as an example for producers who want to engage in greenhouse farming. The seedlings planted practically with the students in the district are harvested by the students when the harvest time comes. The greenhouse, which is meticulously cared for by five engineers from watering to pruning and planting, has become the center of attention for producers in the district center and villages, and they have also started to set up greenhouses for hobby purposes.
THE AIM IS TO SHOW CITIZENS THAT PRODUCTS ARE GROWN IN GREENHOUSES
Selim District Agriculture and Forestry Director Erkan Özdemir told AA correspondent that the greenhouse has been operational for 3 years.
Özdemir explained that they established the greenhouse with the support of the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, stating, "Our aim in the greenhouse is not just to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, but to show our citizens that these products are obtained in greenhouse farming, especially in our district."
Özdemir noted that seeing the products grow has sparked interest in greenhouse farming among citizens, and that students also benefit from this. He mentioned that they use a drip irrigation system in the greenhouse and that it has come to this point thanks to the dedicated efforts of agricultural engineers, adding that they have received feedback from citizens saying, "We also want to do greenhouse farming."
THEY HARVESTED PRODUCTS DESPITE THE COLD WEATHER
Özdemir stated that they continue to harvest products despite the cold weather in autumn, and he noted:
"We are in October, and our greenhouse will continue until it snows. Depending on the seasonal conditions, we have been harvesting products from our greenhouse for about 4-5 months. Our products are quite delicious and organic, so there is a lot of interest."
"PRODUCERS STARTED AS A HOBBY"
"ESPECIALLY CHILDREN ARE VERY EAGER"
Tuğba Genel emphasized that they are very excited to grow products in the greenhouse and set an example for citizens.
Indicating that they take care of all aspects of the greenhouse themselves, Genel continued:
"We work very dedicatedly and with love with all our friends. As we see the positive feedback we receive, our fatigue turns into joy, especially the children are very eager. We connect them with soil and plants. Seeing the seedlings they helped plant grow and harvesting the products when the time comes makes them happy. Besides, we introduce and inform the farmers who come."
"WE GOT QUITE BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTS"
Citizen Ömer Akbaba stated, "We saw the greenhouse when the District Agriculture Directorate implemented a nice project, and we wanted to try it too. They provided us with seedlings and supported us with the maintenance work. We planted tomatoes, peppers, beans, and eggplants. We got quite beautiful products."
