As of February 2026, a 12.5% increase has been applied to mandatory traffic insurance premiums, which concern millions of vehicle owners. In Istanbul, premiums for some vehicle groups have exceeded 300,000 lira.
New amounts have been announced for mandatory traffic insurance, which concerns 32 million vehicle owners. The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) has announced the premiums that will be valid this month. A 12.5% increase has been applied to traffic insurance premiums.
THE DIFFERENCE REACHED 500%
According to the news on NTV, someone who wants to insure their vehicle at the fourth level in Istanbul will need to pay between 17,000 and 59,000 TL. Those who do not have insurance will not be able to drive, and if they do, their vehicle will be impounded with a fine.
The premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zero level in Istanbul is 51,177 TL, while the premium for the driver at the eighth level with the lowest risk is 8,530 TL. In other words, the difference between the risky and non-risky is around 500%.
TRAFFIC INSURANCE PRICES IN ANKARA
The premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zero level in Ankara is 49,729 TL, while the premium for the driver at the eighth level with the lowest risk is 8,288 TL.
The premium for a risky driver with an internal combustion engine at the zero level in Izmir is 48,281 TL, while the premium for the driver at the eighth level with the lowest risk is 8,047 TL.
INSURANCE FOR TAXIS HAS INCREASED
In Istanbul, the premium amount for commercial taxis at the zero level is 137,510 TL, while the amount at the eighth level is 22,918 TL. In Ankara, this amount is set at a maximum of 133,618 TL and a minimum of 22,270 TL, while in Izmir, the maximum is 129,726 TL and the minimum is 21,621 TL.
BUSES ARE COMPETING FOR LEADERSHIP
The mandatory traffic insurance for a bus with 31 or more seats at the zero level in Istanbul has risen to 337,829 TL. The eighth level is 56,305 TL.
THOSE WHO WILL BE PROHIBITED FROM TRAFFIC
As of 2026, drivers who do not have traffic insurance will face a fine of 1,246 TL, and their vehicles will be prohibited from traffic until the deficiency is resolved. Traffic police can use their discretion to impose fines at the time of capture and may request drivers to immediately obtain their traffic insurance policies to avoid vehicle impoundment.
