Ebola screening centers will be established at some U.S. airports expecting heavy passenger traffic ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Dr. Mehmet Oz, Director of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, provided public health assessments related to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup during a press briefing at the White House.

Oz stated that Ebola screening centers will be established at airports expected to experience heavy passenger traffic due to the tournament starting on June 11, and said they have a "well-structured game plan" for combating the virus.

Noting that the U.S. National Institutes of Health is conducting intensive work on combating the disease, Oz emphasized that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent any public health issues during the international tournament.

Oz stated that Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, is an extremely successful figure in his field and that he effectively managed the process related to the Ebola outbreak.

EBOLA CAUSED THE DEATHS OF THOUSANDS IN AFRICA

Recent debates regarding the spread of the Ebola virus, which has re-emerged based in Kenya, have led some countries to take additional measures.

The Ebola virus, which causes a type of hemorrhagic fever, first appeared with simultaneous outbreaks in 1976 in Nzara, Sudan, and Yambuku, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The disease was named after the Ebola River, as the outbreak in the DRC began in a village near that river. The Ebola virus spread in West Africa in December 2013. During the outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2017, 30,000 people were infected and over 11,000 patients died.
