US President Donald Trump proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” While Trump's remarks quickly became a topic of discussion, the US President later clarified that this was not a serious proposal and that he was only joking.
US President Donald Trump drew attention with his post about the Strait of Hormuz. Trump claimed that the US has established control over the strait and suggested changing its name. However, he later clarified that this proposal was not a serious initiative.
SUGGESTED “TRUMP STRAIT”
In his social media post, Trump floated the idea of changing the current name of the Strait of Hormuz. The US President said in his post, “Now that we have taken control of this area, should we rename the Strait of Hormuz to the Trump Strait? Just like America itself, this strait would become more popular than ever.”
“IT WAS JUST A JOKE”
After Trump’s post, attention turned to whether the US President would stand by his words. Trump, responding to reporters’ questions in the Oval Office, was asked if he was serious about the proposal to rename the Strait of Hormuz. Trump replied, “No, it was just a casual joke,” indicating that his remarks were not a serious attempt to change the name.
HE HAS CHANGED GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES BEFORE
Trump’s statements about the Strait of Hormuz brought his previous similar actions back into the spotlight.
After taking office in 2025, the US President signed an executive order providing for the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” The Mexican government opposed the decision, arguing that the name of an internationally shared body of water cannot be changed unilaterally.
Most recently, on August 27, Trump signed an executive order providing for the renaming of Lake Ontario, on the Canadian border, to “Lake America.”
