US President Donald Trump addressed the Canadian people going to the polls, once again calling for the country to become the 51st state of the United States.
LISTED HIS PROMISES
In a post on his social media account, Trump advised Canadians to elect a leader who would cut taxes in half, raise military power to "the highest level in the world," and quadruple all sectors, especially in automotive, steel, aluminum, lumber, and energy.
"BORDERS WILL BE REMOVED, FREE ACCESS WILL BE PROVIDED"
Trump argued that these promises could be realized with "zero taxes and tariffs," stating that if Canada became part of the US, borders would be removed and "free access" would be provided.
"IT WOULD BE 'LOGICAL' IF IT BECAME THE 51ST STATE"
Trump claimed that the US provides Canada with hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies each year, stating that this support would only be "logical" if Canada became the 51st state of the US.
"THINK ABOUT HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS LAND MASS WOULD BE"
In his post, Trump argued that there should no longer be a border between the two countries, which were "separated by an artificial line years ago," saying, "Think about how beautiful this land mass would be. It would be advantageous in every way, with no disadvantages. This was something that should have happened already."
TAX CLASH
With Trump's signature, additional tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico came into effect on March 4. The US imposes a total of 20% additional tariffs on China and 25% on Canada and Mexico. Canada announced that it would respond to the US's move with tariffs of the same rate. US-made alcoholic beverages were also removed from the shelves in many provinces of Canada, and the Premier of Ontario, the country's most populous province, announced that they would charge an additional 25% fee for electricity provided to US states. In response to the electricity price increase, Trump raised the additional tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada to 50%.
