US President Donald Trump made a statement on his social media account regarding the temporary 3-day ceasefire previously announced by Russia.
“INCLUDES THE EXCHANGE OF 1000 PRISONERS FROM BOTH COUNTRIES”
The US President said, "I am pleased to announce that a 3-day ceasefire (May 9, 10, and 11) has been declared in the war between Russia and Ukraine. This ceasefire includes the suspension of all military activities and the exchange of 1000 prisoners from both countries."
“THE REQUEST CAME DIRECTLY FROM ME”
Donald Trump emphasized that the request came directly from him, stating, "I am very pleased that President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky have accepted this. I hope this marks the beginning of the end of this long, deadly, and challenging war."
Trump noted that negotiations between the two countries continue, saying, "Negotiations are ongoing to end this great conflict, and we are getting closer to a resolution every day."
RUSSIA HAD DECLARED A CEASEFIRE ON MAY 8-9
Russia had already declared a ceasefire with Ukraine due to Victory Day. In a written statement made by the Russian Ministry of Defense on May 5, 2026, it was stated that a 2-day ceasefire had been declared in Ukraine. The statement said, "By the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, a ceasefire has been declared on May 8-9, 2026, in honor of the celebration of the Soviet people's victory in the Great Patriotic War. We expect the Ukrainian side to comply with this as well."
