U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario, which borders Canada amid rising trade tensions, to "Lake America."

US President Trump signed the executive order renaming Lake Ontario at a signing ceremony held at the White House.

RENAMED "LAKE AMERICA"

In his statement regarding the executive order, Trump said the lake in question lies between New York and Ontario, and that it is perfectly natural for it to be called "Lake America." Recalling the presidential order to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America," Trump said he took great pleasure in taking this step.

TENSION BETWEEN TRUMP AND CANADA

After trade negotiations between the two countries ended without results last week, Trump announced that starting next year, customs duties on automobiles, trucks, automotive parts, and steel imported from Canada would be increased to 50 percent.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, on the other hand, said they would respond with equal measures to Washington's new tariffs to protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also fiercely criticized the US tariff decision during a program he attended, and Trump described these criticisms as "bragging."
