Special $1 coins featuring a portrait of US President Donald Trump on one side have gone on sale to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Legal debates continue regarding the depiction of a living president on US currency.
PUT ON SALE
The US Mint announced that $1 coins bearing President Donald Trump's portrait, prepared for the 250th anniversary of the country's independence, have been put on sale.
The obverse of the coin features Trump's portrait, with the word "LIBERTY" above it. Below the portrait is the inscription "1776 ~ 2026," indicating the year the US declared independence and its 250th anniversary.
The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States. The seal depicts a bald eagle holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, along with the Latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, one).
The design was approved this year by the US Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump. Trump had previously described the idea of putting his portrait on a coin as "very unusual" but said he was "honored" by it.
PORTRAYAL OF LIVING PRESIDENT ON COIN SPARKS DEBATE
The coins, which can be used as legal tender, have also drawn criticism due to federal regulations prohibiting the depiction of a living president on US currency. However, under certain conditions, the Secretary of the Treasury has the authority to authorize the minting and circulation of special coins.
The US Mint stated that the coins were minted to "honor 250 years of great American heritage." Rolls of 25 coins were offered for $61, and bags of 100 coins were sold for $154.50.
