After a series of explosions in Venezuela, President Trump stated, "A large-scale attack operation has been successfully carried out. Maduro has been captured along with his wife and taken out of the country." Trump has been accusing Maduro for a long time of emptying Venezuela's prisons and forcing inmates to migrate to the U.S. Another accusation is that he uses oil revenues to finance drug-related crimes.

Explosions occurred in four cities, including the capital Caracas, in Venezuela. As panic spread throughout the country, a state of emergency was declared, and a statement that would create headlines came from U.S. President Trump.

"A LARGE-SCALE OPERATION WAS CARRIED OUT"

Trump's statement included the following phrases:

"The United States has successfully carried out a large-scale attack operation against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro. Maduro has been captured along with his wife and taken out of the country. This operation was conducted in coordination with U.S. law enforcement agencies. Details will be shared later. A press conference will be held today at 11:00 AM (TSI 19:00) at Mar-a-Lago."

AT LEAST 7 EXPLOSION SOUNDS WERE HEARD

According to eyewitnesses, at least 7 explosion sounds were heard around 2:00 AM local time in the capital. It was reported that after the explosions, many people left their homes and headed to the streets, and in some areas, the sounds of explosions were clearly heard from a distance. Aircraft observed flying low also caused panic throughout the city.

DETAIL ON "CHRISTMAS" FROM U.S. OFFICIALS

Two U.S. officials, who spoke to CBS News and requested to remain anonymous for security reasons, claimed that the attacks were considered to be carried out on Christmas Day, but this plan was postponed due to the prioritization of U.S. airstrikes against ISIS targets in Nigeria. The officials also argued that the operation was delayed for a while due to adverse weather conditions in the days following Christmas.
