UK Sanctions Businesses Funding Conflict In Sudan

15.04.2024 15:57

Newly imposed measures include asset freezes on companies associated with Sudanese Armed Forces, paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The UK on Monday announced sanctions against three businesses that are "funding the military groups behind the conflict in Sudan."

The newly imposed measures include asset freezes on companies associated with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), curtailing their financial capabilities.

"This senseless and brutal war has devastated lives. A year on since the outbreak of fighting, we continue to see appalling atrocities against civilians, unacceptable restrictions on humanitarian access and an utter disregard for civilian life," Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in a statement.

The sanctions are imposed on Alkhaleej Bank, Al-Fakher Advanced Works and Red Rock Mining, limiting their financial freedom and they would face asset freeze.

"The businesses that support the warring parties must be held to account, alongside those responsible for human rights abuses.  The world must not forget about Sudan. We urgently need to end the violence," Cameron said.

Last month, the UK unveiled an £89 million ($111 million) humanitarian aid package for Sudan. -
