Republic Prosecutor H.G., serving in Istanbul, fell into the trap of phone scammers. Panicked by the lie that there was suspicious activity in his account, the prosecutor was defrauded of a total of 850 thousand lira.
Public Prosecutor H.G., 33, serving in Istanbul, became the target of phone scammers on April 24 after work. The suspect, calling from a landline with the 212 area code, introduced himself as a bank official. The scammer claimed there was suspicious limit usage in the prosecutor's account and asked him to check his mobile banking account.
HE SAW THAT 480 THOUSAND LIRA WAS WITHDRAWN FROM HIS ACCOUNT
According to a report in Sabah; Prosecutor H.G., upon logging into the mobile app, noticed that 480 thousand lira had been withdrawn from his account. The suspect created panic by asking if he recognized the account to which the money was sent.
The scammer hung up, saying he would call back to reverse the transaction.
THEY HAD HIM TAKE A LOAN WITH THE "REVERSE TRANSACTION" LIE
Calling back after a while, the scammer said a "reverse transaction" needed to be done and had Prosecutor H.G. apply for a 370 thousand lira loan. The suspect then requested that the loan amount be transferred via EFT to the specified account.
After performing the instructed steps, Prosecutor H.G. suspected he had been scammed. Unable to access his account, he called the bank and learned he had been defrauded of a total of 850 thousand lira.
SUSPECTS ARRESTED
Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. Police teams, working under the coordination of the prosecutor's office, detained three suspects: Musa D. (53), Ramazan T. (32), and Ece D. (19).
ONE PERSON ARRESTED
After their procedures at the police station, the suspects were referred to the courthouse, where Musa D. was arrested. Ramazan T. and Ece D. were released under judicial control.
It was learned that Prosecutor H.G.'s defrauded money was recovered through the prosecutor's office's efforts and his losses were compensated.
