The grieving father of 12-year-old Zeynep Sut, who lost her life after falling from the cliffs in the Akçay neighborhood of Derik district in Mardin, recounted the day of the incident.
The incident occurred on the night of August 18. According to reports, health and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene for Zeynep Sut, who fell into a dry riverbed in the Akçay neighborhood. The health teams received little Zeynep wrapped in a blanket from her father. Upon examination, it was determined that Zeynep had died at the scene. The little girl's body was buried in the Akçay neighborhood after the autopsy procedures.
While the investigation into the incident continues, father Kasım Sut shared his experiences. Stating that he has two disabled children, father Sut said: "I had taken the children to Şanlıurfa with their mother. I sent my other little children to another village to take care of the animals of the man from whom I bought the car. Zeynep was at home, along with her sister and my two children. We went to Şanlıurfa, had the children examined, got the medications, and I came home. I asked, 'Where is Zeynep?' Her sister said Zeynep left the house at 10:00. Zeynep would always go to the lake, the fig tree, and around the river. When I asked again, she said she went to the lake with her friends. I thought she went to the lake. I was on duty. I came home around 15:00-16:00. Then I went back to duty. Around 21:00, my wife called me and said, 'Zeynep hasn't come home.' I got permission from the duty commander and came to the village with my friend who is a guard.
"I SAW BLOOD TRAILS, SHE WAS BETWEEN TWO STONES" First, we went out to search the river. When we couldn't find her in the river, I thought of the fig tree. The fig tree is right in front of us. Zeynep used to pick figs from there and bring them to us. We searched around here. In the riverbed, I first saw her slipper and blood trails. It was between two stones. I immediately picked her up and brought her home. I called the ambulance right away. People from surrounding villages had also come to help me. I was going to put my child inside first, but then they said the ambulance was nearby. I opened the trunk of the car I saw nearby; it was quite big. I placed my child there and asked for a blanket from home. I covered half of her with the blanket. The health workers looked at the child and said, 'May your head be healthy, the child has passed away.' That’s when I realized my child had died."
A large-scale investigation initiated regarding the incident is ongoing.
