16 suspects involved in the fight that led to the death of former police officer and restaurant owner Ergün Karakaya (40) in Adana have been detained. It emerged that Karakaya had received a shop from his debtor Fırat Bozkır (30) as collateral for a debt, and the shop was mortgaged, which led to the fight.

16 suspects identified as involved in the brawl in which former police officer and restaurant operator Ergün Karakaya (40) died were taken into custody. It emerged that the shop Karakaya received from Fırat Bozkır (30) as payment for debt was mortgaged, and the fight occurred for this reason. Nine suspects, including murder suspect Şaban Bozkurttan (39), who was caught while fleeing with Bozkır to Gaziantep, were arrested, while the other 7 were released under judicial supervision.

The incident occurred on April 5 at around 01:30 in a car rental shop on Ahmet Güven Kaypak Street in the Dumlupınar neighborhood of Seyhan district. Former police officer and restaurant operator Ergün Karakaya, along with his brother Eray Karakaya (32) and cousin Tuğrul Karakaya (27), went to see Fırat Bozkır, who owed him money. When Ergün Karakaya and Bozkır failed to agree, an argument broke out between the two. With the involvement of Karakaya's relatives and 12 acquaintances of Bozkır, the argument turned into a brawl. After Şaban Bozkurttan, who was with Bozkır, fired a pistol, Karakaya returned fire, leading to a clash between the sides. Ergün Karakaya was shot in the chest and died, while 5 others were injured.

CAUGHT ON THE ROAD

Teams from the Homicide Bureau of the Public Order Branch Directorate, investigating the incident, detained 15 suspects involved in the brawl. The suspect who used the weapon, Şaban Bozkurttan, was caught on the highway while heading to Gaziantep to flee abroad. The investigation revealed that Fırat Bozkır had transferred a shop in Seyhan district to Ergün Karakaya as payment for his debt. It emerged that the hostility between the parties began because the said workplace was mortgaged.

'I FIRED TO PROTECT OURSELVES'

During questioning at the police station, suspect Fırat Bozkır claimed that although he transferred the workplace as payment for his debt and said he would remove the mortgage, Ergün Karakaya pressured him. Murder suspect Şaban Bozkurttan said, "While we were sitting at the workplace, Ergün started shouting and pulled out his pistol. I fired randomly to protect ourselves."

After their procedures at the police station, 9 suspects, including Eray Karakaya, Tuğrul Karakaya, Şaban Bozkurttan, and Fırat Bozkır, were referred to the courthouse and arrested by the court; the other 7, including Bozkurttan's injured brother Remzi B., were released under judicial supervision.
