A new gas leak occurred in the Kartepe district of Kocaeli, following a gas fire that started 13 days ago. Teams ignited the methane gas in a controlled manner and secured the area.

Thirteen days ago, gas that had emerged from underground in Kocaeli's Kartepe district had started to burn. Again, gas was released in the same area today. Teams burned the gas in a controlled manner.

FIRE OCCURRED DURING METRO CONSTRUCTION

On February 17 at around 14:00, during drilling work at the metro construction on Bedir Street in Dumlupınar Neighborhood in Kartepe, methane gas that surfaced ignited at a depth of approximately 47 meters. Teams cordoned off the area to take safety precautions. On February 18, while the fire brigade extinguished the flames with a fire blanket, expert teams from Turkey Petroleum Corporation and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey arrived in the area to take samples. After the sampling, the fire brigade reignited the fire in a controlled manner.

GAS EMERGED AGAIN AT A DISTANCE OF 500 METERS

While the fire that broke out on February 17 has been ongoing for 13 days, another gas leak occurred today on Millet Avenue next to the D-100 highway in Dumlupınar neighborhood. While drilling work was being conducted in the area, gas of an unknown type was released when they reached 45 meters below the surface. Fire, health, AFAD, and police teams were dispatched to the area. While teams were conducting inspections in the area, the gas was burned in a controlled manner.
