A 55-year-old fisherman in Bangladesh was hospitalized after a bizarre accident while fishing, and an eel that entered his body through the anus was removed in an emergency surgery. The fish, which caused serious damage to his intestines, was found to be still alive during the operation, and the case entered medical literature.
The extraordinary incident in Bangladesh also drew attention in the medical world. A 55-year-old fisherman, who had a live eel enter his body through his anus while fishing, underwent emergency surgery at the hospital where he was admitted with severe abdominal pain and signs of infection.
DID NOT GO TO THE HOSPITAL FOR DAYS
According to the case published in the International Journal of Surgery Case Reports, a live eel entered the unfortunate man's clothing during fishing and traveled through his rectum into his body.
Embarrassed by the incident, the fisherman initially did not seek medical help, thinking the eel would come out on its own. However, he went to the hospital when the pain intensified and his health deteriorated.
WAS FOUND TO BE STILL ALIVE
X-rays and examinations revealed findings suggestive of intestinal perforation, as well as a foreign object in the abdominal cavity. Further investigation identified this object as a still-living eel. The presence of free air in the abdominal cavity strengthened the suspicion of intestinal perforation.
A TEAR OCCURRED IN THE LARGE INTESTINE
In the emergency surgery patient, it was determined that the eel had caused a tear of approximately 5 centimeters in the sigmoid colon, the last part of the large intestine. Surgeons repaired the intestinal damage while removing the live eel and performed a colostomy to reduce the risk of infection.
Following the successful treatment, the 55-year-old fisherman was discharged four days later.

Experts emphasized that such cases are extremely rare, but contact of live animals with sensitive areas of the body can cause serious, even life-threatening injuries.
