North Korean security forces have launched a harsh campaign against women undergoing breast enlargement (implant) surgery.
IN NORTH KOREA, THOSE WHO GET BREAST IMPLANTS WILL BE SENT TO WORK CAMPS
The Kim Jong Un regime describes these operations as "capitalist breast implants," and secret agents and neighborhood patrols have been mobilized to identify doctors performing illegal aesthetic surgeries and the women undergoing them. Women caught face the risk of being sent to work camps.
FIRST TRIAL HELD
The seriousness of this crackdown became evident during a public trial held in mid-September at a cultural center in the city of Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province. The defendants were a medical student who dropped out of medical school and two women in their twenties who underwent breast enlargement surgery.
It was determined that the silicones used in the surgeries were smuggled into the country from China and that the doctor used them at home. In the courtroom, seized medical instruments, silicones, and cash were displayed. The prosecutor described the act as "capitalist actions corrupted by bourgeois traditions," while the trio of judges announced that they would be severely punished for committing an "anti-socialist act."
It was also revealed during the trial that security forces physically examined women suspected of having undergone surgery. Neighborhood committees were instructed to identify women whose bodies had changed and send them to hospitals. This situation has reportedly caused great fear, especially among young women.
