President Erdoğan stated regarding the claims that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz, "Closing the Strait of Hormuz would create significant difficulties. We believe that Iran will not take such a step. We do not consider it even a possibility that there would be a situation where they would cut off our natural gas. Right now, we are receiving natural gas from Iran. We have no issues at all."
President Erdoğan answered journalists' questions on the plane returning from the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit in The Hague, Netherlands.
JOURNALIST'S QUESTION ABOUT "HORMUZ"
On the plane, a journalist asked Erdoğan, "There have been expectations of a global crisis in energy due to claims about the closure of the Hormuz Strait. We are currently progressing towards complete independence in energy with our own resources. How can Turkey reach a level where it can overcome such turbulent environments in possible global energy crises with its domestic capabilities?"
"WE BELIEVE IRAN WILL NOT TAKE SUCH A STEP"
President Erdoğan's response was as follows; "The closure of the Hormuz Strait would create significant difficulties. We believe that Iran will not take such a step. The recent tensions have once again reminded us of the importance of energy supply security. As Turkey, we are working intensively to increase our own energy resources. We are producing at many points, from the oil in Gabar to the natural gas in the Black Sea, and we are striving to increase this. On the other hand, we are continuing our oil and natural gas exploration activities with seriousness and determination."
"I DISCUSSED WITH MY MINISTER OF ENERGY, AND HE CONTACTED HIS COUNTERPART"
We are making efforts to reduce our imports and increase our production with the goal of being completely independent in energy. Our ultimate goal is to make Turkey an exporting country in terms of resources and technology. What has happened has clearly demonstrated that energy is a matter of survival for countries. Two days ago, a rumor spread, saying; "Iran has cut off natural gas." I immediately discussed this issue with my Minister of Energy; he also contacted his counterpart. In fact, there is no such situation. We also had our meeting with Iranian President Pezeshkiyan. We do not even consider the possibility of cutting off our natural gas. Right now, our natural gas is coming from Iran. We have no problems."
