Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the recognition of Palestine will be considered only on the condition that all hostages are released and Hamas is completely excluded from governance. Opposition leader Giuseppe Conte reacted strongly to this approach, describing it as "a miserable maneuver."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced during a statement made at the UN 80th General Assembly held in New York City, that the government will present a proposal to parliament regarding the recognition of Palestine. However, Meloni stated that this step would only be taken if all hostages are released and Hamas is completely excluded from the administration by being removed from Gaza.

Meloni, who said, "I am not against the recognition of Palestine, but we need to set our priorities correctly," expressed that she expects support from the opposition as well. Meloni also stated that international pressure should be directed more towards Hamas than Israel, saying, "The party that started the war and refuses to end it by returning the hostages is Hamas."
CRITICISMS FROM THE OPPOSITION
Meloni's conditional approach drew criticism from the opposition in Italy. Former Prime Minister and leader of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte, reacted by saying, "The conditional recognition of the State of Palestine, which is Meloni's latest invention, is a miserable maneuver that confirms the lethargy of our government."
"SOON THERE WILL BE NO SUCH THING AS THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE"
Conte stated, "The recognition of Palestine is an official act; you either do it or you don't. Why is Italy not joining the more than 150 countries that recognize Palestine? The hypocrisy of our government, which stands alongside Netanyahu, is unacceptable. If Italy does not hurry, the conditions that allow for the recognition of the Palestinian state will soon disappear. Because soon there will be no such thing as the Palestinian people," he expressed.
