The stones found in a cemetery in the Kocasinan district of Kayseri, adorned with symbols and inscriptions, raise curiosity about the region's history. The legends surrounding these stones, which experts emphasize need to be deciphered, are quite chilling.
Two stones with symbols and writings on them have become the center of attention in a neighborhood cemetery in the Kocasinan district of Kayseri.
HOW AND FROM WHERE THEY CAME IS UNKNOWN While the stones are visible with figures on their front and back sides, the question of how and from where they came to the cemetery has become a matter of curiosity.
LEGENDS ARE HAUNTING Prof. Dr. Osman Özsoy, the Provincial Representative of ÇEKÜL, stated that there are various legends about the grave where the stones were found, saying, "There are two gravestones here. The gravestone here is the most interesting gravestone. In later years, a new grave was made here. We know the story of the two stones; it is believed to belong to a person who died after an incident on the caravan route. But this is not a very long history, perhaps information from the last century. At that time, there was a fight between the caravan chief and a guard, and as a result of the fight, the guard killed the caravan chief. The legend is that he was somehow brought here and buried. The people of this region tell it up to a certain point. The more interesting part is that after the burial, there is also a legend that some stones from the old structures in İncesu were brought here," he said.
"AN IMPORTANT STONE NOT BELONGING HERE" Emphasizing the need to examine the stones and decipher the writings on them, Prof. Dr. Özsoy stated, "When you look very closely at the two stones here, what surprises us the most is a stone that does not belong here. When we first saw such an impressive gravestone, there is an image that represents the Seljuk period. There are various figures, and it has quite an artistic stance. Along with this, there may be a missing inscription. An inscription that we cannot find in the region or that is missing may have been transferred here. Or it could be a piece of a tomb, the writing style matches. Another guess is that this could be a sarcophagus; we have such structures in Turkish Islamic culture. This sarcophagus may have been placed vertically rather than horizontally. When we look at the back and front, the presence of decorations on both sides evokes similar associations. As a result, we can say that this is a stone that does not belong here. We really do not know if this story is true. However, we consider it an important stone that needs to be studied and deciphered," he expressed.
