It was reported that the international mutual legal assistance request from Turkey regarding the critical examination of the mobile phone in the investigation of the suspicious death of Rojin Kabaiş, a student at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, has been accepted by the Spanish authorities. It was stated that the device would be sent to Spain shortly, accompanied by two officials from Turkey, in order to gain access to the digital data on Rojin's mobile phone.
Rojin Kabaiş, a first-year student in the Department of Child Development at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ), went missing after leaving the dormitory on September 27, 2023. Kabaiş's lifeless body was found on the shore of Mollakasım Neighborhood by Lake Van on October 15.
TWO SEPARATE MALE DNA DETECTED IN THE CHEST AND VAGINAL AREA
In the report submitted to the case by the Forensic Medicine Institution's Biological Specialization Department on October 10, it was stated that two separate male DNA samples were detected in Kabaiş's chest and vaginal area. A comprehensive DNA screening was conducted on individuals who may have come into contact with the corpse during the transfer process to the Forensic Medicine Institution Van Group Presidency Morgue Specialization Department. Initially, the DNA profiles of 134 individuals were compared, and this number has recently increased to 195. DNA samples were also taken from university and dormitory security personnel, and it was noted that the number of profiles to be compared could increase.
MINISTER TUNÇ'S INITIATIVES YIELD RESULTS
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated that during a recent meeting with the Spanish Minister of Justice, he emphasized that the investigation conducted by the Van Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is being carried out with great diligence and that resolving Kabaiş's mobile phone is critical for the investigation, requesting support from Spanish authorities. Spanish Justice Minister Garcia also mentioned that they are closely following the Rojin Kabaiş case, and that the request for judicial assistance from Turkish authorities has been communicated to the prosecution and police units, stating that digital data will be obtained by the police and that the Minister of Interior has been informed about the process. Garcia expressed that instructions have been given to complete the necessary procedures as soon as possible.
THE PHONE IS GOING TO SPAIN FOR EXAMINATION
As a result of Minister Tunç's initiatives, it was stated that the international letter rogatory request by the Spanish authorities has been accepted. To gain access to the digital data on Kabaiş's mobile phone, the device will be sent to Spain with two officials from Turkey, and the phone will undergo a criminal examination there. It is expected that the data obtained after the completion of the digital examination, which could affect the course of the investigation, will be sent to Turkey.
