HIGH SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
Rebecca Emerton, a climate scientist at the European Union's (EU) satellite monitoring system Copernicus Climate Change Service, stated in an interview with AA that high sea surface temperatures have been observed in a large part of the Mediterranean, including the Aegean Sea.
Emerton pointed out that the sea surface temperature in the Aegean Sea was 3 degrees warmer than the 1992-2020 average on July 22, the date for which the data is most current, stating, "During the week of July 20-26, the extent and intensity of the marine heatwave in the Eastern Mediterranean increased."
Emerton mentioned that marine heatwave conditions were observed in some regions of the Eastern Mediterranean basin during July 20-26, classifying these conditions as moderate in some areas and strong in others. The northwestern part of the Aegean Sea is among these regions.
According to Copernicus data, as of July 22, the global average surface temperature was measured at 16.64 degrees, which is 0.38 degrees above the 1992-2020 period average.
