2 tons 400 kilograms of narcotics were seized hidden in a shipment of coffee prepared for export to Spain at Colombia's Port of Cartagena. Authorities stated that the operation dealt a significant blow to international drug cartels, while it was noted that the shipment could have enabled the release of millions of doses of drugs in Europe.
In an operation organized at Colombia's Cartagena Port, 2 tons and 400 kilograms of drugs hidden in a coffee shipment were seized.
According to reports in the national press, the drugs were planned to be sent from Cartagena Port to Valencia Port in Spain. Security forces uncovered the cocaine hidden among coffee sacks and coffee-derived products during the operation.
IT WAS HEADED TO EUROPE
The drugs seized in the operation were handed over to the Special Directorate for Combating Drug Trafficking.
In a statement on his social media account, General Director of the Colombian National Police, General William Oswaldo Rincon Zambrano, said they dealt a major blow to the financing of criminal structures in the Caribbean region with the operation.
Zambrano stated, "Cocaine hidden in coffee! At Cartagena Port, we seized 2 tons and 400 kilograms of drugs hidden inside coffee-derived products, planned to be sent to Valencia, Spain."
IT COULD HAVE BECOME MILLIONS OF DOSES OF DRUGS
In assessments in the national press, it was noted that if the shipment had been successful, millions of doses of drugs could have been released onto the market in Spain and Central Europe, providing significant income to international drug cartels.
SMUGGLERS USE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS
Authorities stated that in recent years, criminal organizations have used agricultural products such as bananas, coffee, coconuts, and similar items as cover loads in drug trafficking.
It was reported that smugglers sometimes chemically soak the drug into the products and other times hide it in packages among the loads for shipment.
