Images of a business selling sandwich doner for 3,000 TL in the historic Grand Bazaar in Istanbul's Fatih district sparked huge backlash on social media. Following the videos that quickly spread, Ministry of Trade teams took action and conducted an excessive price inspection at the business in question.
THEY COULD NOT ESCAPE THE PENALTY
After the examinations, an administrative fine was imposed on the business due to an astronomical pricing policy not in line with market realities and label irregularities. Ministry officials stated that inspections against excessive pricing that victimizes consumers, especially in tourist areas, will continue uninterrupted.
STATEMENT FROM THE MINISTRY OF TRADE
Bekir Kaplan, Press and Public Relations Advisor of the Ministry of Trade, said in a statement on the matter: "Following the posts on social media regarding the sale of doner for 3,000 TL at a business operating in the Grand Bazaar, our Ministry of Trade teams took action.
During inspections carried out by our Istanbul Provincial Trade Directorate and Fatih Municipality police teams;
It was determined that 100 grams of doner was offered for sale at 600 TL at the business, and records were prepared for 4 products within the scope of unfair price increase. The prepared records and all information-documents were sent to the Unfair Price Increase Evaluation Board for evaluation. Additionally, during the inspections, it was determined that 12 products did not include cl/ml information in violation of the Price Label Regulation, and an administrative fine was imposed on the business.
As the Ministry of Trade, we will continue our inspections with determination to protect the rights of our consumers, combat unfair pricing practices, and ensure a fair trade order."
