In eastern Hungary, a bus carrying Polish tourists rolled into a ravine, killing 12 people and injuring more than 10. Preliminary findings indicate the driver fell asleep, causing the accident; the driver has been detained.
A bus carrying Polish tourists overturned into a ditch in Hungary, resulting in the deaths of 12 passengers.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on his social media account that a bus carrying Polish tourists was involved in an accident in Hungary, and that 12 people lost their lives in the crash. It was reported that more than 10 people were also injured in the accident, which occurred after midnight on the M3 motorway near the settlement of Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary.
OVERTURNED INTO A DITCH
It was stated that the Polish-registered bus, carrying 57 passengers and 2 drivers, overturned into a ditch according to initial assessments, likely because the driver fell asleep, and the driver was taken into custody by the police. While the evacuation of passengers from the bus continued throughout the night, a crane was used to rescue some passengers trapped under the bus. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced that officials from the Polish Consulate in Hungary were in contact with Hungarian authorities.
