According to a report by Lithuania's state television LRT, a cargo plane that took off from Leipzig, Germany, crashed near Vilnius Airport. One person died in the accident, and at least two others were hospitalized. The head of the country's National Crisis Management Center, Vilmantas Vitkauskas, stated to LRT, "One crew member was found without signs of life, two others were rescued and taken to the hospital." According to a statement made by the airport spokesperson to CNN on Monday, the accident occurred at 5:30 AM local time (ET 10:00 PM) near Zirniu Street, south of the capital. The airport spokesperson said, "The city's special service units and Vilnius Airport Fire Teams are working at the scene and managing the rescue operations." The spokesperson noted that some flights were delayed due to the ongoing rescue operations near Vilnius Airport, but all scheduled flights were still being carried out. According to Reuters, the crashed cargo plane was operated by the SWIFT airline on behalf of DHL. According to LRT, Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas stated that the plane narrowly avoided crashing into a house and fell into a nearby yard. Benkunskas reported that all 12 people in the house survived. According to LRT, there were no casualties on the ground, and the plane's pilot was rescued alive at the scene. Witnesses reported that firefighters were spraying water on the building, which had a large column of smoke rising into the sky.
