According to officials, the accident occurred in the Katcha area of Niger State. The fuel tanker veered off the road, overturned, and shortly after, caught fire due to a fuel leak. Many ambulances and fire crews were dispatched to the area following the explosion.

FRSC stated that some of the deceased were civilians who were trying to collect fuel after the tanker overturned. Many people nearby were severely injured as they were caught in the flames at the time of the explosion. It was reported that some of the 46 individuals transported to hospitals are in critical condition.
