According to court records, the incident occurred in August of last year in the Isle of Sheppey area. Allegedly, three youths consisting of two boys aged 15 and 16, and a 16-year-old girl lured Cashford to the seaside and ambushed him. They then attacked him while shouting "pedophile."
Fatal attack with glass bottles and stones
The video shown in court shows Cashford standing with his back to the camera. One youth strikes the back of the man's head hard with a glass bottle. Although Cashford tries to defend himself, the attack continues.
The footage captures the youths shouting curses and calling him a "pedophile." Cashford attempts to escape, but the youths chase after him. At one point, Cashford collapses to the ground, and although he gets back up, he is attacked again.
The prosecution stated that the attack continued even after Cashford fell to the ground, particularly with large stones being thrown at his head and body. Witnesses reported that the stone-throwing continued even though the man was no longer moving.
A trap was set with fake messages
According to prosecutors, two days before the attack, Cashford shared his phone number by giving a business card to a 16-year-old girl he met by chance on the beach. Later, the youths exchanged about 75 messages with a fake girl profile using the name "Sienna."
It was claimed that Cashford introduced himself as 30 years old in the messages and showed interest in the young girl. Following this, the youths called Cashford to the beach to bring alcohol.
Cashford met with the youths on the beach around 7:00 PM on the evening of August 10. According to the court, he lost his life just 68 minutes after this meeting.
The moment of the attack was recorded, and the video was shared
The prosecution stated that part of the attack was deliberately recorded by the 16-year-old girl, and the video was essentially filmed as "evidence." The footage shows the girl encouraging the youths by shouting during the attack.
It was also mentioned in court that the 16-year-old male youth sent the attack video to others and added mocking comments to his message.
Police teams called to the scene found Cashford severely injured about 50 meters away from the beach road, on a stony ground. The autopsy revealed serious injuries to the face and head, bruises on different parts of the body, and broken ribs that punctured the lungs.
The trial is ongoing
One of the three youths being tried in connection with the incident has admitted to the charge of manslaughter. However, the other two defendants deny the murder charges. The court continues the trial to clarify whether the attack was premeditated and the roles of the defendants.
