A plane taking off from India to London, carrying 242 passengers, crashed just one minute after departure. It was reported that the plane directly hit the cafeteria of the medical college in Meghani Nagar. Rescue teams have reached the bodies of at least 30 people.
A passenger plane from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, India, crashed into a residential area just 1 minute after takeoff to London Gatwick Airport. Initial reports indicate that 30 bodies have been recovered from the "Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner" aircraft.
THERE WERE 242 PASSENGERS ON BOARD
While the number of passengers on the plane, identified as "Air India 171" in Indian media, varies, India Today claimed that there were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. It was reported that there were 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian citizen on the crashed plane.
CRASHED ON TOP OF THE CAFETERIA
The Indian police announced that the crashed plane hit the doctors' accommodation building. It was reported that the plane directly crashed into the cafeteria of the hostel where intern doctors and students stayed at BJ Medical College in Meghani Nagar. While no official statement has been made regarding the cause of the accident, it was reported that there were 50-60 intern doctors in the cafeteria at the time of the crash.
FORMER PRIME MINISTER ALSO ON THE PASSENGER LIST
On the other hand, it was claimed that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was on the crashed Air India plane. Rupani served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from August 2016 to September 2021.
TURNED INTO A BALL OF FLAMES
While details regarding the accident are awaited, social media footage from the area showed thick black smoke in the air. Footage of the moment of the crash revealed that the plane had turned into a ball of flames. Additionally, it was reported that the airport and surrounding roads were closed, and many ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
Indian Interior Minister Amit Shah spoke with Gujarat state officials regarding the accident and announced the support of the New Delhi government.
