As the new year approaches, while price increases are expected for many products, the price increase for simit in İzmir has also been announced. Şükrü Erişen, the President of the İzmir Pide Gevrek Manufacturers and Similar Tradesmen's Chamber, stated that the simit, which is sold for 12.5 lira, will be sold for 15 lira after a 17% increase, citing the 200% increase in the price of a sack of flour as the reason for the hike. According to Cumhuriyet's news, Erişen stated in his remarks regarding the issue, "As you know, with the arrival of the new year, there are price increases in many expense items, from worker wages to insurance, from taxes to fuel, and from raw materials to rent. Considering the economic situation of the citizens, we are not in favor of increasing prices for products, but it is our duty to protect our members against these increases."
