The ancient inscribed stone block unearthed from under the ground during infrastructure work underway in Sakarya drew the attention of the locals. In the huge historical ruin that emerged during the excavation work by the roadside, it was seen that there were regular blocks of letters in the form of "MNI... POY ZON K...".
During infrastructure work on the Akçakaya Neighborhood road in the Pamukova district of Sakarya, a stone block with an ancient inscription was unearthed from under the ground. The period of the stone, which bears Greek or Latin letters and volute details, will be determined after epigraphic and technical examinations.
FOUND DURING INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS
Teams operating in the infrastructure work area on the Akçakaya Neighborhood road in Pamukova district encountered, during field work, a historical structure remnant bearing multi-line inscriptions written in an ancient language and featuring curved architectural ornaments and volute details on its lower part.
WORD ARRANGEMENTS DREW ATTENTION
Among the details that draw attention on the surface of the stone, the regularly arranged letter blocks and word sequences in "MNI... POY ZON K..." engraved in the ancient alphabet and in the following lines stand out. Experts state that such expressions are generally found in ancient monumental tombs, honorific inscriptions, or votive inscriptions.
Clear information about which period the stone block, written in Greek or Latin letters and considered to be official, administrative, or belonging to a monumental/grave cult, dates from will become certain after the epigraphic and technical examinations to be carried out.
