German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has appointed 53-year-old Sinan Selen, who has long served as the deputy head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, to the presidency, a position he has held in an acting capacity for the past 10 months.
HE WILL BE THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF IMMIGRANT ORIGIN
According to reports in the German press, Selen will begin his duties as the head of the 4,200-person institution starting tomorrow. With Selen's appointment as the head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, for the first time, a person of immigrant origin has been appointed to lead a state institution related to security in Germany.
HE CAME TO GERMANY AT THE AGE OF 4
Selen was born in Istanbul in 1973. He came to Germany at the age of 4 due to his journalist family's job. He studied law at the University of Cologne. He later worked as an administrative lawyer at the Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Criminal Police Office. Since January 2019, Selen has served as the deputy head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and is an expert on international terrorism.
