The decision was made to release Rümeysa Öztürk, a PhD student at Tufts University in Massachusetts, who was detained in the United States.

A new development has occurred regarding Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish PhD student who was detained for supporting Palestine, as reported by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City.

RELEASED

It has been reported that the court has decided to release Turkish PhD student Rümeysa Öztürk, who has been held in detention for about a month and a half.

DETAINED ON MARCH 25

Rümeysa Öztürk, a PhD student at Tufts University in Massachusetts, was detained on March 25 at around 5:15 PM local time by agents from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) near her home in Boston. Öztürk, who received a Fulbright scholarship and is in the final year of her doctoral studies, was stopped while leaving her home to go to iftar with her friends and was suddenly surrounded by six masked civilian ICE agents. Despite her objections, Öztürk was handcuffed and placed in a vehicle about two minutes later.

'IT WAS ALLEGED THAT SHE SUPPORTED HAMAS'

In a statement made by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, it was claimed that Öztürk, a supporter of Palestine, had "engaged in activities supporting Hamas," and a spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security stated that Öztürk had been transferred to the ICE Processing Center in Louisiana. The Boston District Court temporarily halted Öztürk's deportation.

In a lawsuit filed by Öztürk's lawyers, the court issued a transfer order so that she could physically attend the bail hearing to be held in Vermont, but the U.S. government sought to appeal this transfer order to prevent it.
