A poisonous snake was found in a high school football player's helmet, and he continued practicing without noticing. Officials safely removed the snake. The football player continued practicing after getting a new helmet.
A high school football player in the U.S. state of Arkansas practiced for about an hour without realizing there was a venomous snake inside his helmet.
During the practice session at Maumelle High School, the player began to feel unusual movement inside his helmet. After the young athlete reported the situation to the defensive coach, Athletic Director Kirk Horton was called to the scene.
When the coaches inspected the helmet, they encountered a snake about 60 centimeters long hidden under the padding section. A subsequent examination determined that the snake was a cottonmouth (water moccasin), considered one of the most venomous species in the U.S.
Describing his surprise, Horton said in a statement to KARK TV: "It was a truly huge shock and an unbelievable situation. In my ten-year tenure, the odds of encountering such an event were even lower than winning the lottery."
Officials placed the helmet in a large carrying bag so the snake could be safely removed and requested assistance from the local Animal Control Service.
Animal Control Service Director Chris Davis said the young player survived a major danger without injury. According to Davis, when the team arrived at the scene, they inspected the helmet and confirmed that there was indeed a snake inside.
Initially, it was determined that the snake was not a copperhead, but later it was assessed that it could be a cottonmouth or a water snake. After examinations, the snake, identified as a venomous cottonmouth, was safely removed and released into a wooded area away from the school.
Despite the frightening incident, the high school football player continued his practice after getting a new helmet.
Following the incident, the coaching staff reminded all players to always check their equipment before putting it on to prevent a similar situation. A special safety meeting was also held for the team the same day.
Animal Control Service Director Davis said that although he has encountered many unusual incidents throughout his career, he had never seen anything like this before.
"I've removed snakes from car ventilation ducts, engine compartments, bags, and backpacks before," Davis said, continuing: "But removing a snake from a football helmet? I've seen it for the first time in my life. It seemed unreal. It's very hard to believe unless you actually witness it and take photos."
According to experts, cottonmouth snakes prefer to hide in dark and sheltered areas. In this incident, the snake was hidden among the padding material inside the helmet. To safely capture it, the padding area was filled with water, causing it to come out of its hiding spot.
Davis also noted that the incident could have had much more serious consequences. Stating that the young footballer could have faced serious health issues if bitten by the snake, the official said, "In my opinion, the cottonmouth is the second most venomous snake in Arkansas. The rattlesnake ranks first."
