In the Patnos district of Ağrı, the court announced its decision in the case filed against Rojbin Kartal, who was the co-mayor candidate from the DEM Party in the March 31, 2024 Local Elections.
Rojbin Kartal, who ran as the co-mayor candidate of the DEM Party in the elections in Patnos, was sentenced to 5 years in prison for aiding a terrorist organization. The court also imposed a political ban on Kartal.
The court stated that the defendant was charged with "Membership in the PKK/KCK Armed Terrorist Organization," but concluded that the actions within the scope of the file constituted the crime of "knowingly and willingly aiding the organization without being a member of an armed terrorist organization." Based on this assessment, the court decided to sentence Rojbin Kartal to 5 years in prison under the relevant provisions of the Turkish Penal Code.
POLITICAL BAN ALSO IMPOSED
The ruling stated that the sentence was set at the lower limit, considering the defendant's intent, the manner of the crime's commission, and the intensity of her intent. The court also ruled to impose a political ban on Kartal as part of the sentence.
