As claims that serums, commonly known as atom or yellow serum, can cause death continue to be a topic of discussion, experts have issued another warning. Associate Professor Dr. Burak Demirci stated, "It's not innocent at all; it's concerning that it is so popular and widely used. It can be very dangerous. We are truly astonished to see it being applied in health cabins and homes. It can result in death."

With the arrival of winter months, there have been significant warnings from experts regarding serums commonly referred to as 'atom' or 'yellow serum' due to the increase in flu cases. Associate Professor Dr. Burak Demirci, Administrative Responsible from the Emergency Medicine Clinic of Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital, along with Specialist Dr. Mehmet Oktay Alkan and Specialist Dr. Burak Akın, emphasized that the belief that serums can help with upper respiratory infections, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue is incorrect. It was stated that there is a high demand from citizens presenting to the emergency department regarding this issue, and the necessity of acting according to physician recommendations was highlighted. Experts warned that individuals trying to meet these demands in various ways at home or workplaces could lead to fatal outcomes. The Ministry of Health reminded that such applications should only be performed under doctor supervision and in a hospital environment.
"THINKING THAT ALL BAD CONDITIONS WILL IMPROVE AT ONCE IS NOT TRUE" Stating that the persistent demand for 'yellow serum' is very wrong, Associate Professor Dr. Burak Demirci said, "It is not a harmless situation at all; the yellow color of the serum comes from the B vitamin content added to it. When B vitamin derivatives such as B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6 are injected, they react and create a yellow color. The yellow color does not contribute to the patient's health in any way. It is sad that it is so popular and widely used today. Our patients generally think that it will help them when applied, that all their bad conditions will improve at once, but that is not the case. It is preferred because it is thought to suddenly alleviate conditions like upper respiratory infections, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue. It is entirely a demand that arises when citizens are ill. Frankly, we do not apply it in our emergency department, but we receive a very high demand from citizens. If we think of it as flu, it could be caused by a viral agent or a bacterial infection, and in both cases, the vitamin has no destructive property at the source of the disease. Supportive treatment is a demand that arises due to completely wrong information and accumulation. We do not recommend our citizens to request such treatments in hospitals or to apply them themselves at home, on the street, or in unregistered places. Neighbors or acquaintances say, 'I had it done, and I felt much better the next day.' This spreads very quickly among the public, leading to hospital visits, which puts us in a very difficult situation," he said.
"IT CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS" Dr. Demirci stated, "We need to explain serum treatment to the public in more detail because there are certain points where we need to use serum. It is already possible for our patients to obtain the B vitamins they will receive through the serum via natural nutrition. If a doctor prescribes medication considering a bacterial or viral agent, its use will be more effective. Also, while it is called yellow serum, it may not only contain B vitamins; the practitioner can add painkillers, steroids, or many other active substances. Since these do not cause any color change, they are not discussed. Both medications and vitamins have serious anaphylactic reactions, which can cause allergies in the body. The spectrum ranges from itching and redness to airway obstruction, swelling of the uvula, cessation of breathing, and shock. It can be very dangerous; we are genuinely astonished to see it applied in health cabins and homes. Anaphylactic shock requires rapid intervention, and when the application sites are not hospitals, it is generally delayed, which can result in death. Our most important request is that all applications must be performed under hospital conditions. We will ask our citizens to avoid using medications indiscriminately and not to request serums or injections without a doctor's recommendation or statement, and to be more sensitive," he said.
"MINUTES ARE CRUCIAL WHEN ANAPHYLAXIS OCCURS" Specialist Dr. Mehmet Oktay Alkan stated that physicians make treatment recommendations by monitoring the patients' conditions: "Yellow or atom serum is commonly referred to as such. This serum is a treatment method that normally contains a B vitamin complex, cortisone, and sometimes painkillers or antibiotics. There is no scientific data supporting the use of this treatment for flu or upper respiratory infections. It can cause serious reactions ranging from simple allergies to death, so we ask our public not to be demanding in cases where they could recover with medications prescribed by their physician. Even in individuals without allergies who have used this medication dozens of times in the hospital, anaphylaxis can cause serious reactions. If they really feel bad, we recommend that they go to hospitals for this treatment because minutes are crucial when anaphylaxis occurs. Treatments done in health cabins or at home can lead to patients' deaths. Our request is that they should not insist on serum or injection because this increases the congestion in the emergency department. It can delay the treatment of real emergencies that could be fatal within 24 hours. They are getting this treatment done at home or in health cabins for a certain fee; if they really need it, our physician will apply this treatment in the emergency department."
"IF THE PHYSICIAN DOES NOT FIND IT APPROPRIATE, REQUESTS FOR SERUM OR INJECTIONS SHOULD NOT BE MADE" Speaking about the processes in which they use the serum referred to as 'yellow serum', Specialist Dr. ...

Dr. Burak Akın stated, "We prefer the Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome in cases like beriberi disease. As with any interventional procedure, there are risks associated with this serum treatment. It can lead to risks ranging from minor skin infections to death. Requests may arise, but there is currently no proven place for yellow serum treatment in the medical literature for respiratory tract infections. Interventional procedures can also have serious complications. Our Ministry has both posters and warning texts on this issue. We advise our citizens to have any interventional procedures, serum treatments, and similar applications performed in a hospital environment, in settings where emergency interventions can be made. Regarding upper respiratory tract infections, our request is that they use the medications prescribed by our physicians, and if our physician does not deem it appropriate, they should not make requests for serum, injections, etc., as our access to real emergency patients is being restricted."
