Women in Şişli, Istanbul, held a protest march today for Bahar Aksu, who was killed by her ex-husband. In a statement made during the demonstration, it was said, "How will we women be safe?"
Bahar Aksu (34) was shot by her ex-husband Rüstem Elibol while on her way to work in Şişli. Aksu died at the scene, while Elibol and three of his friends were taken into custody.
MURDER PROTESTED
Women gathered to protest this murder marched from Pangaltı Square to Kazım Orbay Street in the Cumhuriyet neighborhood where the incident occurred.
"HOW WILL WE WOMEN BE SAFE?"
After the march, a press statement was read on behalf of the group. The statement included, "We are here for Bahar. We do not accept this order. Bahar Aksu was attempted to be abducted this morning by Rüstem Elibol and his three male friends in Şişli, one of the busiest districts of Istanbul, in this very street where we are now, where we walk every day, and which was surrounded by thousands of police on May 1st. Rüstem Elibol murdered Bahar Aksu by shooting her multiple times because she resisted the abduction attempt. We ask from here, how will we women be safe while the perpetrator, encouraged by male justice, is among us?"
