In Şirince, İzmir's world-famous touristic village, the sale of olives at a stall for 50 TL per piece and 1,000 TL per kilogram, with the vendor claiming they were "special and healing," sparked controversy. Following the footage, the Ministry of Commerce took action, imposing an administrative fine on the vendor and referring the case to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board.
In Selçuk district of İzmir, in touristic Şirince, a single olive sold at a stall for 50 lira and a kilogram for 1,000 TL stunned onlookers. As if the price wasn't enough, the seller claimed the olives were "special and healing."
TEAMS CONDUCTED INSPECTION, VIOLATIONS FOUND IN 4 DIFFERENT PRODUCTS
Ministry of Trade Press Advisor Bekir Kaplan made a statement on his social media account regarding the incident.
Kaplan stated: "Following news in the media about a seller in İzmir offering olives for sale at 50 lira per piece and 1,000 lira per kilogram, our Ministry of Trade immediately launched an investigation. The investigation determined that the seller operates in Şirince neighborhood of Selçuk district in İzmir; during an inspection by our İzmir Provincial Trade Directorate teams, violations of Law No. 6502 on Consumer Protection were identified in 4 different products offered for sale.
ADMINISTRATIVE FINE IMPOSED
An administrative fine was imposed on the seller due to the identified violations. Additionally, the file has been referred to our Ministry of Trade's Unfair Price Assessment Board for evaluation of the products under unfair price increase legislation. As the Ministry of Trade, we will continue our inspections with determination to protect our consumers' rights and ensure a fair and transparent trade order in the market."
