Following the fire at Grand Kartal Hotel in Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Center, where 78 people lost their lives, there has been a significant increase in demand for fire extinguishers and fire suppression systems in Gaziantep. Citizens and businesses looking to enhance their safety measures turned to fire suppression equipment after the tragedy. Manufacturing companies have begun to work intensively to meet the demand. Merchants selling fire equipment in Gaziantep stated that they have been experiencing a busy sales period in recent days.
"DEMAND HAS INCREASED INCREDIBLY"
Fire trainer Vahit Erkan, who sells fire extinguishers, stated that demand has increased, saying, "We have been operating in Gaziantep for 30 years. We install automatic suppression systems and hood suppression systems. Recently, as you all know, the market situation has changed. In a recent incident, 78 people lost their lives. We are working intensively due to this tragic event. Unfortunately, as a nation, we do not think about taking precautions until a problem occurs. Right now, we are having hundreds of meetings throughout the day. The demand has increased incredibly. People are calling us saying, 'Let's buy an extinguisher for our home, let's install an extinguisher in our car, let's take fire precautions for our workplace.' But I wish we had taken these precautions before such a tragic event occurred," he said.
"HOTELS AND OTHER BUILDINGS ARE ALSO UNDERGOING STRICT INSPECTIONS"
Trainer Erkan stated that fire systems should undergo periodic checks every six months, saying, "We all witnessed the details of the incident through the media. The failure of detection systems, issues with fire escape stairs, and delays in the use of fire extinguishers created serious problems. We should not face such an incident again. Municipalities are currently conducting serious inspections in this regard. For example, they are inspecting public buses and imposing obligations. Hotels and other buildings are also undergoing strict inspections in the same way. In terms of fire safety, at the very least, fire systems should undergo periodic checks every six months. A comprehensive general inspection should be conducted once a year, and the refilling of extinguishers should be done every four years. If these extinguishers do not activate during a fire, we may face undesirable consequences," he stated.
Providing information about prices, trainer Erkan said, "A vehicle extinguisher costs 350 TL, 2 kilograms 500 TL, and we sell 6-kilogram extinguishers for workplaces for 1,000 TL including VAT. These extinguishers are suitable for areas of 50 square meters. Other extinguishers are used in industrial areas. I believe this amount is not a high cost when considering a person's safety," he said.
"IF THERE HAD BEEN A SIREN SYSTEM, MANY LIVES COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED IN THE RECENT INCIDENT"
Providing information about inspections, trainer Erkan reminded that "Fire extinguishers must be regularly checked, and fire escape stairs and emergency exit doors must be checked as well. If there are fire extinguishers used in the kitchen, they must be supported by automatic suppression systems with hoods. These systems are especially important for hotels. For example, if there had been a siren system, many lives could have been saved in the recent incident. The detection systems of fire systems and their periodic checks must be conducted at least once a year. Additionally, working with occupational health and safety experts provides great benefits. These experts will provide the necessary information and guidance in detail," he stated.
"THE FIRE SCARED US, AND WE INCREASED OUR PRECAUTIONS"
Citizen Yılmaz Bakır, who stated that they increased their precautions after the fire, said, "We were already taking our precautions. We increased our security measures more for precautionary purposes. That's why we are buying a fire extinguisher. We are buying a fire extinguisher for our home and business. We used to buy them before, but this fire scared us, and we will be more careful from now on," he said.
